Expanding Access

Brass for Beginners expands access to both learning and teaching brass.

Brass instruments are pervasive in almost every cultural and historical context throughout human history, and the experience of playing them is entirely distinct from any other instrument family, yet only a small percentage of school children have the opportunity to learn a brass instrument.

Proven Methodology
Developed by music and social science educators, the Brass for Beginners® interdisciplinary approach is engaging and effective for students from grade 3 and up. The program develops creative and technical skills while making meaningful connections to history, culture, acoustics, and the human experience of music-making. Learn More

Learning
Even in schools with instrumental music programs, brass instruction is typically limited to students who join band and demonstrate immediate aptitude on a modern brass instrument. By bringing brass into the general music classroom, Brass for Beginners® removes many of the traditional barriers to entry. It gives all students the opportunity to explore brass playing, discover their musical potential, and develop a lasting appreciation for brass instruments.

Teaching
While many music educators possess some familiarity with brass playing, only band directors typically have the opportunity to introduce brass instruments to beginners. Brass for Beginners® expands the ability to teach brass to educators of all musical backgrounds, making brass education accessible in a far wider range of educational settings.
